President Goodluck Jonathan Condemns Egyptians For Ejecting President Morsi.

Nigeria’s Federal Government said Thursday that it had received news of the ousting of President Mohammed Morsi of Egypt and the suspension of the country’s constitution with serious concern.

Egyptian Armed Forces overthrew the first democratically elected President of Egypt after protesters gathered near the Presidential Palace for days.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement referring to the developments as "a truncation of the aspirations of the Egyptian people to freely express themselves through the ballot box."

"This unfortunate development is a gross violation of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, which prohibits unconstitutional change of government. It constitutes a serious setback to the remarkable progress which Africa has made in fostering the culture of democratic governance in the continent," the statement further read. "Nigeria calls for the immediate restoration of the democracy order in Egypt and urges the Egyptian Armed Forces to allow the democratic culture to thrive in the country."
