Meskerem Legesse, 26- years-old former Ethiopian marathon runner has passed. She died after collapsing at a Connecticut restaurant on Monday. She had gone with her 2-years-old son for lunch at a Chinese restaurant on the 900 block of Dixwell Ave in Hamden when she collapsed and she was 8-months-pregnant. All efforts to save her proved abortive but her baby was saved.
Her friend, Fatima Sene, said the athlete had heart problems which had caused her to retire from sport. She added that the former marathon runner was so careful during her pregnancy that she drank nothing but water and ate extremely healthy.
Her 2-years-old son and her newborn baby girl are with their father and arrangement are being made to transport Legesse's body to Ethiope for burial.
She ran the 1,500 meters at the Athens Olympics in 2004, she finished 12th in a first-round heat with a time of 4:18:03 and didn't advance to the medal race. she moved on to a professional running career in the US, competing in events including the Boston indoor games, Fifth Avenue Mile in Manhattan and the Millrose games in New York. She apparently hadn't raced within the past few years.
This is really heartbreaking. Even when someone eats healthy and is extremely careful about preparing for new life, the grim reaper strikes without warning. We all have an expiration date and it's scary that our next breath is not a guarantee. I feel so bad for those sweet little ones that will grow up without their mother. R.I.P beautiful young lady!
