What should have been a holiday weekend at the spa with a pilgrimage to the land of Pietrelcina Padre Pio, has turned into a slaughter of innocents as 38 people were killed and 10 seriously injured in a tragic road accident in Italy.
An Italian tour bus lost control near the town of Monteforte Irpino in Irpinia, a town in-between Naples and Rome, plowing through several cars before plunging some 100 feets off a viaduct on Sunday night.
Witness told newsmen that the bus was going on a normal speed on the downhill stretch of the highway when it suddenly veered and started hitting cars.
The bus was carrying a group of weekend holiday makers from Naples. The group had arrived from small towns near Naples to a thermal spa hotel on Friday afternoon, and had spent the weekend visiting the spa and the early home of Padre Pio, a late mystic popular monk known among catholics.
36 coffins were lined up next to bloodied bodies, clothes, luggages and personal effects of victims.
Firefighters work through the night to extract the victims and survivors from the twisted wreckage of the bus.
